The software costs $149.00 and is available from ALA. Many asked for a hit on responses, and many were like me, have the software, but have not used it. Here are responses from those of you who are more on top of things with many thanks from the rest of us that of it that haven't made the leap. I always have wonderful ideas in the summer and then the school year starts and time races away. Photoshop Elements works fine. We've taken one round of pictures and have printed 9 posters so far and everything works well. The biggest hint comes in taking the picture. We have the kids sit in front of green or blue paper. Make sure the kids do not wear that color; that allows you to separate them from the background. Also have them keep their elbows in; no need to eliminate the background between arm and trunk. Other wise, it's pretty simple. We just save as a .jpg and burn the images onto a CD. Kinko's charges about $2.50 per poster to print a 11 X 17 glossy poster. We have the kids autograph them with a silver or gold pen and for now, they are hanging in the hall. If you get any good ideas, would you please post a hit? Thanks, I think Elements will work, too. I usually use the full blown photoshop, but the parts of it I use are in the elements version, too. Good luck! I have used it to make posters of the kids who are Battle of the Books winners (I print out on photo paper in regular size); I also made a full size poster for an aunt turning 100! She loved it! (Printed it at Kinko's). I use Photoshop Elements to use to READ software. There is a bit of a learning curve to understand the layers and placement of objects, but it wasn't too hard for me. I do recommend the use of a blue screen or some plain background that can be easily removed when trying to replace the background. I can't really answer your question about whether you can use photoshop elements or not. But I can tell you that you can use the READ CD to make some nice posters without photoshop at all. For SOME of the backgrounds you can just use MS Word. I don't know about Photoshop Elements, but I use Paint Shop Pro (much cheaper than Photoshop) with the templates, and can use all but the layered eps templates. I have created 8 1/2 x 11 posters of staff and "star" students, and have them all on a "READ board" display. I think the students get a kick out of seeing their teachers with a favorite book, as well as students. However, do be aware that it takes time to create the posters. I have gotten faster as I have practiced and learned more about how to create them, but, at best, it takes me at least 150-20 minutes per poster. -- Pam Gelbmann, Media Specialist Wilson/Johnsville Elem.
