[LM_NET] SEC: Contemporary replacement for "The Pearl"

Colleagues-
One of our freshman English teachers wants to replace The Pearl with a
more contemporary selection (hooray!). He wants something multicultural
and/or about poor families. The first book that came to my mind was
Angela Johnson's The First Part Last. Any other suggestions? TIA!
