Thank you to all of the people who made suggestions for a contemporary addition to
our freshman honors English list. I appreciate your help so much.

My target was:

"One of our English teachers has asked me to give her the name
of two fiction books that the department might consider for our 9th grade
honors English reading list .I suggested "Speak" by Laura Halse Anderson,
and she has added that, but they are trying to update the list and want two
more contemporary titles. Do you have suggestions that we might consider?"

One person said that it is her recommendation to stick to the classics for advanced
placement classes because those books will prepare students for SATs, college, and
life. She also pointed out that the people who read SATs will have read the
classics and references to characters in them is impressive whereas they may not
have read contemporary novels.

Our lists are mostly classics but we are thinking that it would be good to add two
more contemporary selections to them.

The suggestions I got were

House of the Scorpion by Frances Farmer

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn x2

Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson x2

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
