Thank you to all of the people who made suggestions for a contemporary addition to our freshman honors English list. I appreciate your help so much. My target was: "One of our English teachers has asked me to give her the name of two fiction books that the department might consider for our 9th grade honors English reading list .I suggested "Speak" by Laura Halse Anderson, and she has added that, but they are trying to update the list and want two more contemporary titles. Do you have suggestions that we might consider?" One person said that it is her recommendation to stick to the classics for advanced placement classes because those books will prepare students for SATs, college, and life. She also pointed out that the people who read SATs will have read the classics and references to characters in them is impressive whereas they may not have read contemporary novels. Our lists are mostly classics but we are thinking that it would be good to add two more contemporary selections to them. The suggestions I got were House of the Scorpion by Frances Farmer Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn x2 Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson x2 The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd The Lovely Bones and Lucky by Alice Sebold Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card The Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings Acceleration by Graham Macnamee Stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers by Mary Roach Singing the Dogstar Blues by Alison Goodman Curious Incident of the Dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon Comfort by Carolee Dean The Maze by Will Hobbs Petey by Ben Mikaelson Eva by Peter Dickinson Camouflage by Miklowitz Princess: A true story of life behind the veil in Saudi Arabia by Jean P. Sasson Forged by fire by Draper A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly Skellig by David Almond Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett Hoot by Carl Hiassen Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson "What can I say?
