Lynette:

Well, the convention is NOT to use an editor's name as part of the call
number, so unless all the essays in the volume are written by the same
person, you would default to the first three letters of the title (NOT the
series title, so you wouldn't use TWA for every book in the
series). Thus, 813 MAR would only be correct if all the essays in the
volume were written by Barry Marks. Let's say for illustration purposes
that the title from the title page was _John Steinbeck, Voice of the
Oppressed_, and that it is part of the Twayne's American Authors Series,
edited by Joe Schlobotnik. Call number would be 813 JOH, since Joe is the
editor, not the author of all the essays; and the title starts with 'John',
not 'Twayne's'.

You could also be adding a decimal to the base number if you wished to be
more precise, based on the dates for the author covered as the subject of
the book, but that's another can of worms! <G> <sound of can opener> say,
813.52 JOH , since Steinbeck's main body of writing was in the first half
of the 20th century (hence the .52, instead of the .54 for the latter half
of the century).

Of course, the base number would vary, depending on the genre of the
specific writer being covered: playwright only as opposed to novelist only
as opposed to poet only as opposed to criticism of mixed genres (i.e. a
volume of criticism of Gary Soto's novels and poetry).

Hope this helps.

Mark
