I look at my parents as my partners in their kids education not as
adversaries. I have a school with a very vocal supportive group of parents.
When our program was cut from a weekly library period to a bi-weekly one and
I was assigned to another school on the alternate week, who do you think
badgered the Supt. to re-instate weekly library program? The principal? No,
the PTO parents. Many of these women are also my library volunteers.

Can you imagine how much support I'd have in my school if I started making
annoying phone calls? As a Mom I know that 6:30 is a usually a very hectic
time in a family with school aged children. It is NOT when you want to hear
that your kid has a book overdue.

We send out letters via the kids monthly. Often the books come back before
the letter goes home because it was in a desk. More often we receive the
book or payment for a replacement within a day or two.

Of course there are always those who will keep the book out longer and/or
not pay for it till June. So be it!

Over the years I have had a child's parent demand that the child never take
out another library book after they have paid for a lost one. That is often
the child who has no access to books at home and really needs books. So I
work out a deal with the child and his teacher where the book is signed out
in the teacher's name and may not leave the school building. I've never had
a problem with these books being lost or destroyed.
