I have done this with first graders using an old crock pot to keep the wax
at a perfect temperature. There is still a burn risk, but having a parent
with them there keeps it safe.

Try this website http://www.learnpysanky.com/. We've had a person come
and do demonstrations of this for elementary age children, but they did
not get to make their own egg due to the open flame. We gave them
markers and papers with egg-shaped outlines and had them design eggs.
We could have let them decorate real eggs some other way, but there
really wasn't time. The demonstration was fascinating and they enjoyed
the program a lot.
