I was going to respond to this but Tony Doyle said it perfectly.

I was reading at that level when I was that age but recoiled, resisted
and did a U turn when anyone tried to foist things on me that were "more
at my level" but no fun whatsoever. It even took me a while to warm up
to Little Women. I preferred to read Caddie Woodlawn, The Diamond in
the Window, and other books that were written for people more my age,
and maybe just get more nuances out of them than some others did. The
"heavy sledding" stuff I preferred to wade into slowly and in my own
timeframe.

one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit
facts." Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.
