As promised, here is my list of 47 suggestions I received. What I found
amazing is I only received one duplicate (Granny Torelli makes soup). I haven't
chosen my two yet, because I've been home sick all week. I hope to return
tomorrow and I will check to see what books we own, read ones I'm thinking of, and
let you know. Thank you all for your suggestions, I do appreciate it.

BOOK CLUB RECOMMENDATIONS

The boys start the war is always good, if they haven't read it yet.

Someone Was Watching by Davit Patnode would be awesome, too.

Righteous Revenge of Artemis Bonner, by Walter Dean Myers

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi

Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt

A Year Down Yonder, by Richard Peck

Number the stars by Lowry
Joey Pigza loses control by Gantos and
The man who loved clowns by June Rae Wood.
Oh and then there is one of my all time favorites
Summer of the monkeys by Rawls

The Ghost of Fossil Glen by Cynthia DeFelice

A Dog Called Kitty by Bill Wallace

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Beetles, Lightly Toasted by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Also, Andrew Clements has other books such as

A School Story,

Landry News,

Janitor's Boy, and others that are just as fantastic as Frindle. You might
look into these as well.

I LOVED Lion Boy by Zizou Corder.

Shiloh or

Joey Pigza swallows the key?

"True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" by Avi. The protagonist is
female, but the nasty pirates in the story will keep the boys involved.

"Countdown" by Mikaelsen is good, too.

JIP: His Story by Katherine Paterson and enjoyed it. Also,

Crispin, or others by Avi.

I suggest
No More Dead Dogs by Gordon Korman. All kids seem to find it very
entertaining.

Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis (4 star recommendation)

Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech

Treasure Island for a fast group

Swiss Family Robinson

Perhaps some Edgar Allen Poe?

Something Upstairs by Avi
Crash by Jerry Spinelli
Coyote Autumn by Bill Wallace
One of the Nina Tanleven mysteries by Bruce Coville

The first three have male main characters - I find that my avid "lady
readers" can deal with that! Nina Tanleven, although a female main character, will
have enough suspense to keep your guys interested nonetheless!

If you have time, let us know what all of the suggestions were and what you
decided on, OK? Good luck!!

We also did
Holes,
The BFG and
Because of Winn Dixie. They were very well received. Last year among
others, we read Ella Enchanted which was too "girly" for our boys. It has been
great fun to dig into the books with our students.
Granny Torrelli Makes Soup is our next selection. We all love the Creech
books...

You might try "Surviving the Applewhites" by Stephanie Tolan or
"Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelson. Two of the most popular books in my
two 5th & 6h grade media centers.

Books by Bill Myers are great! Good lessons, clean and the kids love it.

I think the kids would love
Ruby Holler, by Sharon Creech. It's a longer book but easy to read and the
kids seem to love it.

The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau

Tale of Depereaux by Kate Dicamillo

I just finished reading
Wringer by Jerry Spinelli. Very sad book at times,
but well written and well worth it. I think it would lead to some great
discussion of peer pressure and being true to yourself.

I love Poppy and

Series of Unfortunate Events

My original posting:

I started an after-school book club in both of my schools for 5-6th graders
and they have been very successful. We have read:

Love that dog by Sharon Creech
Among the hidden by Haddix
Frindle by Clements

I need 2 more suggestions. They can't be too recent, since I borrow them
from the public library, and they should appeal to both boys and girls.

Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
