When I came to my current library, I discovered the barcodes on the back of the
book in the top right hand corner running vertically with the spine. I also
discovered that the librarians had never done inventory on the collection since the
implementation of the placement of the barcodes nearly 10 years earlier.

At the end of the first year there, I decided to do inventory and it was then that
the issue became a real nightmare--mostly my grumbling because I was the one
scanning all of the books (no assistance with inventory, long story). When I
mentioned that the placement of the barcodes was horrible for a right-handed person
(who had to pull out the book and scan the barcode using her left hand because of
the placement of the barcode on the book), my (then) assistant snickered and
said,...."oh, yes,...that's the reason why Marlene (previous librarian) put them
there...she was left-handed."

This makes me think about how I do things now and how those decisions will impact
future librarians in this library.....(gee, my wrist hurts just thinking about this
again!)
