We bought a poodle puppy who had spent all of her life up the point of
purchase in a kennel. We brought her home and sat her in the middle of the
living room floor, where our older poodle pupply ran around her and barked
excitedly. The puppy continued to sit still and didn't utter a sound. We
named her Sophie, after the character in Kevin Henkes A Weekend with
Wendell, because Sophie didn't say anything.

to reply to her directly. And, since people are going out in left field from
the request of children named after book characters, I must add these
favorite namesakes of mine: a former co-worker's middle name was Ayn---her
father loved Ayn Rand's books. And, my favorite high school teacher had a
cat named Oedipus. Ed for short. Bad, huh?
