Dear LM_NET: Sometimes situations arise that you never have considered. On the 22nd of April we had to evacuate the entire school--800 students. Administration, school board, engineers and insurance persons were afraid that a structural defect in the gymnasium might cause the gym to fall into other buildings or cause an electrical or gas fire. In addition, they were afraid that if students were allowed into the building, someone would snoop in the gym and be injured. The following Tuesday the administration gave us one hour to pack anything we might need for the last four weeks of school. I packed a box of reference books--atlas, dictionary, etc., a box of literature criticism for the seniors' big paper, and almost all of the paperbacks. I purchased laundry baskets and placed them in the classrooms for students to return items to. I sorted the paperbacks into boxes for the English, special ed, and 6th grade classrooms so that those students could have something to read when they finished their assignments. I also packed a backup of my program, circulation, documents. I only had a list of overdue items and fines from the beginning of the week but no list of all items on loan. Fortunately this week the office personnel and I were allowed back into the building. We have electricity but no heat. What would you pack? You might give it some thought.
