This is what I mentioned on the list earlier this week. The new test
being developed by ETS MAY be a great way to introduce library skills
into the curriculum -- that is, unless we allow our technology
departments to do it for us.

I think there are many areas within the test that directly relate to
Information Literacy and correspond to what we have been asking our
teachers and administrators to realize that WE, as information
specialists, offer to the curriculum. While there are areas that
include the use of software programs to create things like spreadsheets,
the extraction of that information is something that we teach in regard
to research strategies (such as those found in Big 6-- "trash to
treasure," -- etc.).

But overall, I think the "organization of information" and the skills
necessary to do those types of tasks are definitely in the hands of
information specialists (us).

I am looking at this website intensely because I believe that the next
step is to align our library instruction skills to these types of things
-- not only for our students' ability to achieve success on the test,
but to also provide them with the skills necessary for life-long
learning (and survival) in our information-soaked environment.

Subject: [LM_NET] GEN: ITC LIteracy and Educational Testing Service

Dear LM_NET Colleagues,

I have been skimming through the Educational Testing Service documents
related to ICT Literacy testing program, and wonder if K-12 Information
Literacy models should be reviewed in order that they are aligned with
the approach taken by ETS? See:
http://www.ets.org/ictliteracy/whatisict.html

Several states, including my own California, have partnered with ETS in
the development of this testing program. Several other states and
private universities, including Kentucky, Alabama, Texas and Washington
are also involved.

"ETS defines ICT literacy proficiency as the ability to use digital
technology, communication tools and/or networks appropriately to solve
information problems in order to function in an information society.
This includes the ability to use technology as a tool to research,
organize, evaluate, and communicate information, and the possession of a
fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the
access and use of information."

"To simulate real-life situations in which a person might need to use
ICT skills, the assessment tasks will use innovative measurement
techniquessuch as simulations and virtual worldsthat are
technology-delivered, scenario-based, and interactive in nature. The
assessment will be delivered via the Internet, and the process of
creating a secure delivery architecture is underway."

The ETS ITC "domains" to be tested are shown as follows:

Access - knowing about and knowing how to collect and/or retrieve
information.
Manage - applying an existing organizational or classification scheme.
Integrate - interpreting and representing information. It involves
summarizing, comparing and contrasting.
Evaluate - making judgments about the quality, relevance, usefulness,
or efficiency of information.
Create - generating information by adapting, applying, designing,
inventing, or authoring information.

I am wondering if many others have looked at what ETS is doing, and how
they think it will affect K-12 school and library programs.
