Greetings! Thanks to all the good folks that responded to my original request of any wisdom, tips, tools, etc. that might be helpful to me as I supervise LMS practicum students for the first time. Here is a summary of the responses: Supervising LMS Practicum Students: Tips and Words of Wisdom from LM_NET Members 5/31/05 * Maintain an email dialog with each practicum student, at the end of each week, the student writes a journal entry and the supervisor responds. At the end, the email can be printed and saved for Practicum portfolio. * Keep them busy: bulletin boards, displays, weeding, purchasing, and especially include inventory and budget. * Supervise, but leave them alone! Have them shadow you for a day or two and then leave them in charge, even leave the library often to give them more autonomy. * Schedule a daily morning and afternoon meeting, to go over daily plans and then evaluate the day * Be sure to show practicum students your expectations for library students' behavior. * Have them plan and teach lessons. * Encourage practicum students to visit other LMS in the area. * Encourage practicum students to visit classrooms of strong and interesting teachers, especially those with good behavior management skills. * Prepare projects for practicum students to work on before they arrive. * Include the following: put together resources for a class project; present information skills to students; follow steps to put new materials out for check out; review and select new materials; talk about how to handle challenges; talk about discipline issues/procedures; teach internet searching/databases to patrons; talk about internet protocols or restrictions; policies and operating procedures in a library. * Communicate with the principal, collaborate with teachers for lesson planning, be familiar with State Course and Study Content Objectives, fund raising ideas, understand INFORMATION POWER, and getting involved in local, state, and national professional organizations. * Never allow a practicum student to be in a school that they attended or if they are related to someone in that school. * ENJOY your practicum students!
