LM_NET Archive

Hi, LM_NETters.

I recently posted a request asking about magazines suitable for K5-6.
The list is made considering that only grade 3-6 actually checks them
out.

I was sad to find that there aren't many that simply promote
health/fitness/activity. Also, it seems gaming magazines are either
too hard, violent, mature, or too advertisement oriented. And thirdly,
I couldn't find a news magazine that wasn't a classroom type -- they
won't hold up to library usage.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions! I'm headed to a bookstore to
browse physical copies. Also, I'm going to request sample copies of
others. :)

HERE IS A LIST WITH FAVORABLE COMMENTS:

American Girl
Appleseeds
Boys Life
Cat Fancy (Only because there is no Cats for Kids)
Cobblestone (doesn't circulate much)
Cricket
Dig
Dirt bike (for a slightly older crowd)
Discovery Girls
Disney Adventure
Dogs for Kids
Highlights
Junior Baseball
Kickoff (football)
Kids Discover
Muse
National Geographic for Kids (mixed reviews, most positive)
Nickelodeon
Nintendo Power (mixed reviews, most positive)
Odyssey
Ranger Rick
Science News (for a slightly more advanced reader)
Spider
Sports Illustrated for Kids
Stone Soup
Young Dancer
Zoobooks

HERE IS A LIST WITH NEGATIVE COMMENTS:

Becketts - Useless for literacy. (card collector mags for football,
basketball etc.)
Cat Fancy - Pictures are good, but the articles are too hard
Dog Fancy - Pictures are good, but the articles are too hard
Girls Life - too much kissy boy stuff & advertisements for Elem age students
