Here is the hit on elementary research models: You gotta go with Big 6 (or Super 3 for younger students). It fits with all research topics, you can pick and choose which skills to teach (I try to scaffold it year to year so that by 8th grade my students *should* have all the skills... teaching them all with one project is too overwhelming!), and there are so many resources right now for this method. Karen Rinke Lawrence Catholic School Lawrence, KS rinke@lcschool.net At Tulsa Public Schools, we looked at many models and went through a big adoption process. (Kulhthau, I I M, etc) We implemented the Organized Investigator, the model developed and promoted by David Loertscher. It has 7 steps in a circular model, and starts with "Questions and Wonders." That "wonders" part was the deal-maker for the science people who were involved in the decision making process. This was about 7 years ago. This summer we finally switched to the Big6 because of the plethora of commercial materials available to support it, and because it had that smaller version for the lower elementary, the "Super3." The other factor for switching is that the National Board process has the big6 virtually embedded, so if our people didn't know it, they had trouble with the certification. Hope this helps. It really help students learn to solve any problem them may have. I teach all my lesson using big6 and it has been so helpful. I even use it for discipline in my library. Also, there is already a lot of information about it - research, lesson plans, etc. I was pretty much given free reign by the curriculum committee to pick a model to use. The teachers were very receptive to the idea, but Big6 is more than a research model. It is something they will need to do in the classroom in order to have maximum effect. I am not sure how well that part will go. The is the first year in a while on a completely flexible schedule. Teachers don't quite understand collaboration at this point. I am hoping this is a way to get them to collaborate!
