I don't get pulled to sub anymore - unless there is a great need. At one
point I did. Then I had to either close the library - or have them in here
along with the study hall kids and the drop ins. The principal agreed it was
too many for just one person to supervise in the setting. So, now I seldom
ever have to sub. I have occasionally had a class in for a "study hall"
when a teacher is sick and no other subs are available. The students must
treat it as a class - no talking, no wandering around and staying on task. I
do not get any extra pay for this as I am considered a "supervisory teacher"
which means I get a teachers contract but am considered already a supervisor
so don't qualify as other teachers do - seems crazy, but that is how it is.
And since it is so seldom I don't mind - it makes me a part of the team.

I used to have students coming in during my lunch. Then I realized my
health demanded a break and a meal. The principal would try to schedule
things so I could have lunch and there were no study halls that period and
the next ( both lunch periods for students - 11th & 12th go 4th period, 9
and 10th go 5th period). I posted the Library hours and always had 4th
period as closed for lunch. But I would still get drop ins during 5th which
meant I couldn't block out that time for prep. This year, it was announced
at the first Faculty Meeting that the library wood be closed to study halls
4th and 5th periods - as those were my lunch and planning periods. Since I
have been showing in my year-end reports that I am getting busier each year
and doing even more research with teachers and students. I not only got
official confirmation of my lunch and planning periods - I even got an
assistant!! Granted she is not a librarian, but she is a big help and a
quick learner.
