As it happens, I frequently have people comment that the library action
figure looks a great deal like me. (It does.) People wonder how I got it to
look like me. It's quite funny. Last year, mine was taken from the
circulation desk. Fortunately, I had taken a picture of it, so I made a
Wanted poster and hung it all over the school. Kids got a big kick out of it
and they still ask if she is still missing.

I haven't taken offense by the image portrayed by this action figure.
It's a caricature, after all! It's making fun of the stereotype. I
have this figure on top of my computer, and kids often comment that I
look nothing like her.

My husband (also a teacher here) used to be in the Army. I had a
student bring his G.I. Joe, borrow my figurine and walk around the
school showing others . . . "Look, it's Mr. and Mrs. Mosbacher!" Too
funny! Too bad we didn't have these figures to put atop our wedding
cake so many years ago.

I have to say that I'm disappointed the action figure wasn't revised a
little if they were making the effort to produce a new edition! In my
opinion she looks terrible! Her legs look stunted, and she does nothing
to erase the perpetual librarian stereotype. I love the idea of a
Librarian Action Figure, but this one has a lot of room for improvement.
I use photos of it in my guest lectures at our local library school (to
illustrate the stereotype), and the students always cringe when that
image appears in my presentation!

We have enough trouble recruiting new librarians to the profession.
What student will look at the action figure and say, "That's what I want
to be when I grow up!"?????

I just go my New DELUXE Librarian Action Figure, and I am SO excited!!
She has been the talk of the library all day long. The kids all loved
the original "Nancy Pearl" - so they are thrilled to see the new deluxe
version - complete with book cart AND computer!! Some may think she
reflects the librarian stereotype too closely with her "amazing shushing
action" - but she is really very up-to-date with her books and
computers. And she is just such a fun conversation starter. I tell the
kids all about the real Nancy Pearl. My new little figure shares pride
of place right next to my librarian superhero picture and my Star Wars
Mr. Potato Head figure - Darth Tater.
