I am beginning to gather information about state digital libraries in
preparation for writing a book. We held an interesting discussion about the
value of subscription databases recently here in LM_NET and I read those
messages with great interest. For those who use these digital libraries, I
am wondering about the challenges you find in teaching your students to use
these digital libraries. If you could influence the design of these web
sites, what changes might you make? Some of these digital libraries include
guides and tutorials to help users find information. How do your students
use these? What are some other self-help guides that might be useful to
your students?

A recent article in Teacher Librarian by Mary Ann Bell addressed the issue
of the vulnerability of these digital libraries as states deal with budget
short falls. I worry that many adults do not know these libraries even exist
much less feel like they know how to use them. If we truly believe in
learning communities, what is our role in helping parents learn to use these
digital libraries? When your students do homework do you feel their parents
have the ability to help them find information on digital libraries? If not,
how might we impact that situation?
