Here are the responses I received about paired text:

You might consider starting with the essential question: Does an author need to do
more research to write a fiction book or a non-fiction book? Or How does the
research an author did impact the effectiveness of a fiction book?
Students could look for/identify evidence of research done related to content of a
fiction book. Could then have student consider additional research to answer
questions raised in the story and use non-fiction book to find out more about the
topic.

Novels are much more compelling when the author has researched the setting, context
for actions, etc. Initial reaction will likely be more research is required for
non-fiction, but actually a lot of research is required to write quality fiction
set in a specific location, time period, involves scientific content. think about
the old TV show Murder She Wrote and how Jessica was always research her next book
to be sure her characters actions were authentic. Just a thought for an angle to
approach the activity.

haven't done this, but I'm considering using the Guardians of Ga'hoole series with
NF owls.

This site has lists you can use for paired text and a great lesson plan.
