[LM_NET] QUERY: Outlook or Outlook Express--Is either safe?

I know this is an old issue, but I could use some help.
 
The only computers  in my school with viruses are two used by the former principal, 
who persisted in using Outlook Express. Is Outlook safer? My new principal wants to 
use it, but I still hesitate. Is Outlook really safe or is there a more robust 
alternative for her?
 
Advice and opinions will be appreciated.
