I'm not sure what the situation is in every state but in Iowa there are provisions where private school students and home schooled students can dual enroll and take advantage of various services offered by the public system. We bus every eligible student regardless of which school the child attends, students are offered "special" education services in their school -- such as speech therapy, remedial reading; home-school students regularly attend PE class (students are assigned to a particular attendance center for this), they are able to attend AP courses in science and history for example, and library services are routinely offered to all students. The full $ amount is not provided but there is a partial state accommodation for these dual enrolled students. So if that is not the case in your school you might negotiate with the school to either dual enroll so your school does garner some funds with part going to the library budget or ask your school board to set a "fee" for non-public school use of the library. Could you work out a traveling collection from the public library that would suffice or augment your collection? There must be an amiable solution as after all our goal is to build readers and although I understand the $ issue and frankly support it wholeheartedly I also have the ultimate goal in mind -- Get children READING! So how can this be done without sacrificing your children and their access?
