In Wisconsin the state fund that gives money for materials to school ibraries "calculates each school district's allocation, basing the amount on the number of children ages 4 through 20 living in the district." So that funding is not based on the number of public school students, but basically all theoretical students living in the district. I can't speak for every public school, but our local public school does get a large percentage of our property taxes that every parent pays regardless of whether or not the student attends the school. I know the public universities in Iowa have had to deal with taxpayers who wish to use the library because they pay taxes even though they never have nor will enroll themselves for their children in the college. If the 300 students that attend our private school suddenly attended the public school, they would be in a dire situation. The additions to the building that are required and the additional staff etc. would be much more expensive than the monies received for those students. I agree with others who have commented that we stop being angry at each other and try to work for the good of ALL kids, we are all in the business of caring about and educating the children of this country.
