Let me second that. He was a guest in our district a few years ago and I was
honored to be able to have lunch with him along with other librarians. He
and his wife were utterly charming and fascinating while very down to earth.
And he writes some very fun, fast-paced novels that I recommend to many of
my reluctant readers. I always learn something from them as well.

Subject: [LM_NET] Roland Smith

Hi folks,

When it comes to author luncheons (breakfasts, dinners, etc.) I try to sit
as close to the door as possible. Someone once made the great mistake that
those who can write can also speak, and that someone has never owned up to
the error. And I am especially leery of childrenıs book authors.

So it was with great delight that I got the chance to hear Roland Smith at
our MEMO fall conference last Saturday. While Iıve not read his MN
Childrenıs Choice Award book Zachıs Lie, I found Mr. Smithıs talk utterly
compelling primarily because heıs done more than just write. Heıs been a
wildlife biologist who has worked with wolves, elephants, and sea life
damaged by oil spills. And he has the terrific pictures to prove it. His
adventurous life, a respect for writing, and one of the best, most
self-deprecating senses of humor Iıve heard, made for a wonderful talk.

I canıt help but think any school that wants an author who will appeal to
everyone, but guys especially, would enjoy Mr. Smithıs talk. I donıt
normally endorse anyone or anything, but I still canıt get over how much I
actually enjoyed an ³author talk.²

All the very best,

Doug
