I am writing an article for LEARN NC exploring how the school library
can embrace its role as the “cultural institution that resides within
the school” (Carr, 1991). This article not only outlines ideas and
methods for establishing stronger connections with those cultural
institutions (museums, archives, libraries, zoos, etc.) that reside
within your community but also for cultivating your school library as
a cultural institution itself, a place where free inquiry can happen
alongside of more formal learning, and where inspiration is more
likely to happen.

I’d like to include in the article examples and photos of such
practices that are already being implemented in school libraries.
Although, I am hoping to feature mostly school libraries in North
Carolina, I am also interested in anything that is going on out
there, anywhere. The examples and photos used will be published on
the LEARN NC website along with the article. This is a great
opportunity to bring attention to the work you’ve done! I'll keep
in contact with you to let you know when the article is made available.

Following is a list that describes the type of photos and additional
resources, I’d like to feature with this article. Please send
digital photos in their raw form (no need to cut, crop, resize, etc.)
at the highest possible resolution, attachments, questions, or
comments to kcampbell@learnnc.org

Photos…
Showing how you planned for both formal and informal areas for
individuals, small groups, and classes.
Of creative signage! Especially if you post teasers or informational
notes around your library to help students find materials, discover
related resources, dig deeper, make more connections, or visit you
for more ideas.
Of the on-loan museum display you hosted in your library.
Spotlighting your own school museum (or school museum corner, case,
etc.) featuring student or teacher collections (of fossils or comic
books, for example), the history of drama productions or homecoming
parades over the years, invention convention creations, etc.?
Showcasing your Art Gallery, which could feature student work or
works by local artists…especially if information is provided about
context, medium, etc.
The native species, butterfly, herb, flower, vegetable, or endangered
species garden that your school library has created with the help of
your students or even local gardening group.
Displaying your own special collection… works by North Carolina (or
your state) authors, graphic novels, vintage children books, maps…
Capturing your interactive exhibits that require your students to do
something or your creepy crawler exhibits or other unusual exhibits
you’ve created to catch your students’ attention.
That show how you market your library outside of your library walls…
Exhibits elsewhere in the school or even in the community (public
library, perhaps?)

Additional resources:
Have a stellar website? Please send me a link to it.
Publish a newsletter? Please send it as an attachment!
Do you or your student create Reader Recommendation Cards or
Advisories? Please send some examples! (both blank forms and filled-
in are acceptable)

Thank you for your time and best wishes for a great school year!
