My original post was asking for a title to consider for a 7-12 One Book
project. My criteria was: available in paperback; diversity issues; no
sex/profanity; themes that could be used across curriculum; well
reviewed; part of a series is a plus; around 200 p. if possible; no
fatal accidents or suicides; appeals to grade 7-12.

Thanks to all those that gave me suggestions. We are still undecided
but considering Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I have listed the
suggestions I receive below. Some do not meet all our criteria but then
again, few books do.....

The Alchemist: A Fable about Following Your Dream/ Paulo Coelho, Alan
R. Clarke (Translator)

an oldie but goodie: The Good Earth/ Pearl S. Buck
if you haven't re-read it recently, you should. :)

Touching Spirit Bear/ Ben Mikaelsen (several mentioned this but our
neighboring 6th grade reads it)

Secret Life of Bees/ Sue Monk Kidd (already used as a class novel)

Alexander McCall Smith-
The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

All I can tell you is that the books, House of Scorpion and Holes,
seem to be enjoyed by all ages. I am in a combined jr/sr high school
and have had classes in both the junior high and senior high reading
 this book.

You might think about Mountains beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder all
about the work of Paul Farmer in Haiti with tuberculosis...
