Dictionary or Encyclopedia skill lesson---terms of the colonization. Have a print out of the terms. Show how to use the dict/ency then do guided lesson with all doing the first two terms, then indiv practice. OR-- Do genres Reintroduce what the different genres are and their definitions with students helping with definitions. Have a handout with different titles that students need to find and write down the genre (title-definition match). Do first 2 together, team up the kids and let them see who can get all the way through the list before you call time. Team has to agree on the genre. OR-- Do a Dewey Lesson on where you find the different topics (including the ones for what they are studying). How students go to the shelves and find 2 titles under the dewey that they might like to use again when doing research. These are the quick off of my head lessons. Depends on your teaching style if they will work or not. I do regular "Search and Destroy" lessons with the middle schoolers. Search for the information, Destroy because my library shelves look like someone has destroyed them after several classes have come through.
