I teach in a private school and have responsibility for grades 6-12. In
my middle school capacity, I do have lunch duty (or rather a 15 minute
playground supervision that follows lunch) on a rotating schedule, one
week every six weeks or so. Every person in the middle school has this
duty or parking lot duty. We do not have to supervise the cafeteria per
se. Our lower school teachers do have to take turns every day doing lunch
duty and I think it's terrible! Many of them end up standing to eat in
between dealing with students. We have great parental support so it makes
sense to me to ask for volunteers to give the teachers a dedicated lunch
break! At my daughter's elementary school the teachers do have a
dedicated lunch written into the contract. They have one or two moms who
are there every day all year long and then a committee of other volunteers
who come in to help out. Unfortunately, they took away the playground
break after the kids finish lunch because they don't have certified
personnel to supervise the playground for liability, or at least that's
the excuse. Bottom line, everyone should have time for a dedicated lunch
break every day! My 2 cents!
