I'm looking for recommendations for a novel for junior Social Studies classes to replace one they are currently using, "Ishmael," by Daniel Quinn. The teachers are tired of teaching the book and want to find one that explores similar themes and challenges students to "think outside the box"...issues of globalization, questioning the Western way of life and its impact on the world around us, examining our definition of what constitutes progress. The goal is to stimulate students to look at history and Western civilization in a different light. Thanks for your suggestions.
