I need some documentation of the relationship between SSR time and higher test scores. We have had a 35-40 minute SSR time first thing in the morning in our middle school for the last several years, with core classes about 45-50 minutes long. Our admininstration is proposing a schedule change for next year. They want a block schedule of 70 minute classes, and they want to reduce SSR time to 20 minutes. I am passionate about our SSR time, but obviously I need to present data and research findings to support my stance. I just ordered Krashen's book The Power of Reading and hope to pull some support from that when it arrives next week. Can you quickly point me to any other sources? Although I feel like this proposed schedule is a "done deal," I feel strongly that I must present my stance in writing and be an advocate for this issue, and, of course, as soon as possible.
