I purchased $5.00 cassette walkmans from Wal-Mart and rechargeable batteries. I catalog & circulate the players just like the books on tape. I have marked the walkmans with a warning to not throw away the rechargeable batteries. Keep a cassette deck with headphones near the audiobooks so that kids can sample. If you booktalk the audiobooks and highlight the circulating players, I think you'll find increased circulation. You may also want to buy some $10.00 CD players as well - in this iPod world many students don't have them, either! As far as teachers go, make sure your resource room teachers have a printed list of audiobooks and cassette & cd players in their classroom. In fact, check out a few print copy/audiobook duos at an appropriate reading level to those teachers and perhaps they'll jump on the audiobook bandwagon! I teach in a higher income district, and the kids don't have a cassette player at home, and I don't have any to let them borrow. Should I keep them for teachers to use in their classroom (they don't use them hardly at all). Should I purchase cassette players and batteries for checkout? Suggestions?
