This came up back in the spring and there were some interesting perspectives: http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/archive/LM_NET/2006/May_2006/msg00822.html /****************************************/ /* Bob Hassett, Head Librarian */ /* Luther Jackson Middle School */ /* 3020 Gallows Rd. */ /* Falls Church, VA, 22042 */ /* rehassett@fcps.edu */ /* (703) 204-8133 */ /****************************************/ -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Donna Bedry Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 10:31 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: TAR: Wikipedia article authors It was only a matter of time!! One of our students handed in an essay that matched, word for word, a posting on Wikipedia. When confronted with his apparent plagiarism, he insisted that the Wikipedia posting was, in fact, his work. I know articles are posted / edited anonymously, but is there some way of checking to see who made the posting? Something in our border manager is preventing us from accessing Wikipedia here at the school (yahoo!!!), so I'm unable to check authority, but I could check from home later. We will deal with the whole issue of citing your own work appropriately or elucidating on the work handed in to an extent that convinces us (or not) that the work is original, but just require info from you Wikipedia experts about checking a posting's author. Thanks for any information you can pass on.
