Many thanks to all who replied to my request for yarn shops in New York City.
Although I know to count on fellow librarians, I was completely overwhelmed
with responses. I did receive a few requests for a hit, so here it is:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I love New York! I hope you have a wonderful time! If you are in
SoHo, there is a wonderful yarn shop called Purl on Sullivan St. On
the Upper West Side, there is The Yarn Co. owned by the women who
wrote the Yarn Girl books. It is on Broadway at 82nd. St. on the
second floor. There is also a knitting cafe called Knit NY east of
Union Square on East 14th St.

Of course nothing is cheap in New York, but you'll get lots of
inspiration! I also like to look at the $900 sweaters at Barneys and
figure out how to knit them myself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a shop close to the New York City Ballet and Opera House...you'd have
to ask someone for the exact address...but it's called Moorehouse Yarns. I have
knitted many sweaters (and felted wools as well) with their yarns...beautiful
Merinos! There are also available patterns, kits and felted items (like shoe
liners for insulation). I am an avid knitter and rug hooker...dye my own yarns
as well...so I had a field day dropping lots of money in this store. Beware :-)
Enjoy the city!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you have oddles of fun in NYC.
Here is awesome yarn shop in Westchester, which is a short drive from
Manhattan. They have such gorgeous & yummy yarn! It is on the pricey side,
though.

It is located in Tarrytown, which is a great town to visit. You can go to
the gourmet shops, go antique-ing and visit Sunnyside and see the home of
Washington Irving (Headless Horseman) & visit Lyndhurst Castle. There is
even a great Tea Shop, called Silver Tips, that has afternoon tea and to die
for scones. There is also a Greek restaurant that has delicious Lemon
Chicken Soup.

Sounds like fun, I'm also a knitter... in my gmail it suggests this shop The

I am also a knitter. There are several yarn shops in Manhattan that have
good quality yarn, although most charge rather high prices. The best of
them, in terms of prices, is School Products at 1201 Broadway, 212-679-3516.

Actually, if you just Google yarn and Manhattan, one of the first hits
is to a list of all of the yarn shops in NYC.

If you want to be a bit adventurous and leave Manhattan, I would
recommend Smiley's in Queens. You can call them for subway directions.
They have a huge stock, everything from very fine wools to everyday
acryilics and their prices are cheaper than most Manhattan stores:

There aren't that many yarn stores left in Manhattan (real estate prices being
insane), here's a link to the Big Apple Knitting Guild.

If you click on links, you'll see the first one is NYC resources, and that will
give you a list of some stores in Manhattan.
I've been to 3 or 4 of them. Most are quite small in size-- and most carry
nice (read that as "expensive") yarns.

[ http://www.seaportyarn.com/ ]Seaport Yarn is inside an office building -- a
little difficult to find, but worth the trip (It's on Williams just south of
Fulton). The "store" is in an office suite, so there are different types of
yarns in different "offices" and stuff in the hallways, too. Cramped but has
some nice stuff (sometimes the lighting is not so great, which I have found to
be true in many yarn stores)

heard nice things about it.

There's also a store around 14th street on the east side that's not listed on
this list -- I'll try to find out what its name is and its exact location for
you.

Oy, can I help? Between my Zagat and the current issue of Knits, I think I
can come up with some possibilities. The thing to keep in mind is that because
of rent, most of these places are not that big.
