I recently purchased a set of the Bluford High books from Townsend Press, and while looking through their other offerings, I came upon "Letters My Mother Never Read" by Jerri Diane Sueck, which tells the author's life story of the death of her mother, then abandonment by the father that had adopted her and her siblings before her mother's death. The children went to live with their grandmother, on the father's side, and she abused and neglected them (though the abuse is thankfully not as graphic as Dave Pelzer!). What followed was a life in and out of foster homes and orphanages. The story concludes with Ms. Sueck as an adult, still overcoming issues that were the result of her largely loveless childhood. I read it this weekend and feel that it would be a good follow-up to "A Child Called It" and "The Lost Boy." Also, it is only $2.00 per copy!
