My advice would be: do what you want If you want comics - and students read them - great If you want Reader's Digest - and students read them - great I remember back in the old days when the rumor (and was a fact in many libraries) - that the Wizard of Oz, Nancy Drew, etc. were considered sub-literature and would not be in libraries. MY MOTTO: do what works - and who cares what someone else says?
