Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School Position Announcement School Library Media Specialist Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School seeks a passionate, energetic, dedicated, and knowledgeable individual to become our school library media specialist. Salary is commensurate with experience. Background Thurgood Marshall Academy is a law-themed public charter high school serving low-income, under-resourced teenagers, many of whom live in Washington, DC’ s most disadvantaged community. Our mission is to prepare students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society. As a law-themed school, Thurgood Marshall Academy’s goal is to help students develop their own voice by teaching them the skills lawyers have—the ability to solve complex problems, think critically, and advocate persuasively for themselves and their communities. In order to accomplish our mission, we function as both a school and a youth development organization by integrating a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with in-school and after-school support programming such as academic tutoring, personalized mentoring, and one-on-one college guidance. Thurgood Marshall Academy has built a beautiful library in our newly renovated, historic building in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC. It has shelves for thousands of books and bay windows with views of downtown DC. The goal is to staff and support the library in such a way that the content, design and operation of the library contribute to the school’s mission. We seek a librarian who can connect with the school community, who has a strong grounding in critical literacy, and who has a commitment to social justice. Responsibilities Thurgood Marshall Academy’s librarian will assume responsibility for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the school library program. This includes but is not limited to: * engaging the school community in the design of the facility and selection of the library collection, * developing policies and procedures that facilitate access and use of the facility and collection, * designing the information literacy curriculum and teach information literacy skills to students and faculty, * collaborating with teaching staff in order to enhance student learning, * building the print and electronic collections, * serving on appropriate school committees, * collaborating with teachers to implement integrated instructional activities, * coordinating inter-library loans, and * maintaining professional resources. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Philosophy: Because Thurgood Marshall Academy is beginning our library media program, the successful the applicant will demonstrate * knowledge of effective instructional practices and understanding of the teaching/learning process, * knowledge of current instructional and research technologies and the ability to integrate these into the library media program and throughout the curriculum, * knowledge of strategies for introducing critical media literacy about domestic and international issues, * ability to acquire and manage the opening day collection and technology, * ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, students and community, * ability to assess the needs of all stakeholders involved including students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members, * excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills, and * a social justice/multicultural philosophy/approach to the work. Education, Training and Experience: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school library media, with media generalist specialization and course work in curriculum and special education. Completion of a practicum or two years of successful teaching or two years of successful media-related experience. Certificate and License Requirements: Eligibility for or possession of a District of Columbia, Virginia or Maryland teaching certificate in School Librarianship.
