Sue,

It's an epidemic, I'm afraid...

It sounds as if--if you want a fulfilling career working under that
principal--you absolutely have to talk to her again and revisit the
topic or her low expectations will result in low job satisfaction for
you. This kind of ignorance can cripple your efficacy, so, instead of
being offended, be concerned and try to educate her. Tell her that you
want to make absolutely sure that you'll be allowed to be at least as
vital of a teaching force in the library as you were in the classroom.
Make sure that you let her know in no uncertain terms that you expect
her to expect you to teach. Talk about specifics. Let her know the time
and resourcves you'll need to do that job and make sure she's ready to
accommodate.

HI group,
I am currently a reading teacher in my middle school, I teach 7th
graders. 3 years ago I learned that our library media specialist was
going to retire and so I pondered this for perhaps 5 minutes and decided
I wanted to take her position. Not her place, she is awesome and I
cannot possibly fill her 35 year shoes. I will certainly try though. My
problem is this... when colleagues learn that I am going to be the new
librarian.. they act as if I have lost my mind.. now they do not say
this directly of course, because they are "professionals". but I get the
distinct reaction that they are thinking, "why would you leave the
classroom for the library?.. Are you nuts? This is not my imagination.
We have a new principal and when I passed my Praxis test for LMS I gave
her a copy of my test results and she pulled me aside and asked me
why???Again, I felt like she was asking.."Why would you want to leave
the classroom and JUST be a librarian.?" I have been really offended by
this... what do you all think about this??
