Good morning all.

I'm surprised I haven't yet heard from other SLMS who took issue with
Neal Conan's show last night on NPR's "Talk Of the Nation". Maybe you're
all as nonplussed as I was, and don't know where to begin, either! His
main speaker was not a librarian; nobody mentioned database searching,
even when callers spoke of their frustration with commercial information
when they searched for information online; nobody mentioned copyright
issues when they talked of the "wonderful new possibilities" with
scanning text page-by-page so it can be searched; nobody rebutted when a
caller asked whether librarians of today would "embrace the new
technology" to learn to assist information seekers-there was not a
single voice to let people know that everything we do it geared towards
not embracing, but meeting and mastering the new technologies to help
our information seekers!

There was so much more...I have an email partially composed, but can't
make it short enough without leaving important (!) points out.

I used to like NPR, and used to value the information presented. I'm
beginning to wonder: should I question other presentations when I see
how faulty this one was???

Sighing-
