This is, unfortunately, the result of "empowerment".....when librarians empower
others to be their best, it appears that the classroom teacher, administrator,
etc., is actually the "outstanding educator" when, in fact, librarians are usually
standing quietly behind those teachers and smiling in satisfaction.

I suggest you offer your administrator a copy of Gary Hartzell's article "What's It
Take?" and tell her that THIS is what librarians do. This is what the previous
librarian has done and this is what you hope to also be able to do for everyone.

Be sure to also share the Ross Todd and Keith Curry Lance studies.

Regardless of their attitudes at this point, press on! Good luck!!

HI group,
I am currently a reading teacher in my middle school, I teach 7th graders. 3 years
ago I learned that our library media specialist was going to retire and so I
pondered this for perhaps 5 minutes and decided I wanted to take her position. Not
her place, she is awesome and I cannot possibly fill her 35 year shoes. I will
certainly try though. My problem is this... when colleagues learn that I am going
to be the new librarian.. they act as if I have lost my mind.. now they do not say
this directly of course, because they are "professionals". but I get the distinct
reaction that they are thinking, "why would you leave the classroom for the
library?.. Are you nuts? This is not my imagination. We have a new principal and
when I passed my Praxis test for LMS I gave her a copy of my test results and she
pulled me aside and asked me why???Again, I felt like she was asking.."Why would
you want to leave the classroom and JUST be a librarian.?" I have been really
offended by this... what do you all think about this??
