I have some students who have created a Star Wars website to enter in a technology fair. They have written to Lucas etc. asking for permissions and have had no replies. Much of the artwork that they are using is coming from a site where the owner created his own Star Wars artwork and gives permission for noncommercial use if each picture is credited. This letter was written by one of the students: I am a 6th grader and together with my friend, we would like to create a Star Wars website. We would like permission to use photographs and information from starwars.com and lucasfilm.com in our project. We would like to submit our website as an entry in a technology fair. We do not intend to sell or distribute this in any way. We will cite all information and photographs properly. Thank you for your prompt response. With it went an example from Noodletools showing how they would cite the information. Below is what we found on some other fan sites: Thank you for visiting Star Wars Toy Museum dotcom. All Star Wars related artwork, images, posters, graphics, etc. belong to LucasArts and LucasFilm, 20th Century Fox, and any other respective owners. StarWarsToyMuseum.com is in no way affiliated with LucasFilm, Hasbro, Kenner or other associated licensees. Our site was built by fans for fans. We ask that our users respect the copyright laws with respect to all LucasFilm properties. Any unauthorized reproduction of our original content is strictly prohibited by prevailing copyright laws governing content produced within the continental United States. I have consulted all my copyright handbooks. I believe that if they are not going "live" on the internet with it they are OK if each picture is clearly labeled and they have a proper bibliography. It's if they want to actually put it on the internet as a fan site that they would have to have the actual written permissions to use the pictures etc. Have I missed anything? I will be glad to post a hit if anyone is interested. Thanks.
