Shonda's recommendation of CITY OF EMBER is right on target. We used it
last year as our community read and it was an overwhelming success. Within
an hour or so of receiving the books they were all gone! We ultimately
ordered additional copies as the demand was tremendous. It was wonderful
to hear kids telling kids about the book and encouraging them to read it.
We were fortunate to have a telephone interview with a group of students
and Jeanne DuPrau that was excellent. EMBER certainly did generate a lot
of discussion among students, staff and community members and we had a
wonderful evening of displays, presentations, etc. all centered around
energy conservation that included a hydrogen fuel cell model car, a hybrid
car and free energy saving lightbulbs! We are currently looking for a new
title for this year and we hope we can meet or exceed the enthusiasm of
