    Happy New Year, LM_NET!

This is my first posting of the 2006 year and it is a cross-posting from
AASLForum about an article in yesterday's NYTimes. It should still be availble if
you check it out today. The 65% Solution has serious concerns for school libraries
and librarians and is being introduced on a state-to-state basis. American
Libraries also did an article on the First Class Education movement and how it is
affecting school libraries:

(If this link wraps as I expect it to, you'll need to paste it in two pieces, I'm
sure.)

An AASL group that includes Judi Moreillon, myself and several others is
developing a resolution for ALA Council at Midwinter and AASL President Linda
Williams is appointing a special committee to develop an action plan to counteract
this and other education initiatives that threaten school library programs and
postitions. Both the resolution (which will get the clout of ALA included in the
effort) and the special committee will focus on conncting the teaching role of the
school library media specialist to the impact on student achievement.

If you are hearing about this in your state (or it's been adopted and alread
having an impact, please let me or Judi know)

  Thanks, Sara Kelly Johns

  Dear Colleagues,
A small group of us have been discussing the 65% Solution, an initiative that
requires school districts to spend 65 cents on every educational dollar in the
classroom.

An article appeared in yesterday’s NY Times that indicates this initiative is
gaining momentum:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/04/education/04solution.html?emc=eta1

Check out the link that shows a range for classroom spending in your state.

If this requirement were put into effect in your state, do you believe it would
threaten school librarian positions? If so, how would your state association go
about combating the passage and/or implementation of such a measure? (According to
the NY Times article only New York and Maine currently meet this requirement.)

The Affiliate Assembly passed a statement of concern on this issue last June.
What are your thoughts now?

  Thank you for your input.

  Best,
  Judi Moreillon
