[LM_NET] Gen: Duke Ellington music query

Hello this January 5th,
   
  My music teacher is searching for a music trivia answer.
  Why was Duke Ellington called "Duke" ?
   
  Her textbook says that a high school friend gave him the name in 
  high school but does not say why.  She knows that she has seen
  the reason somewhere but cannot remember why or where she
  read it. We've looked without success.
   
  It  would really be appreciated if someone has at their fingertips the
  answer.
