Thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions of articles that might be helpful in creating effective PowerPoint presentations for instruction. Best, Toni I occasionally used a suggestion site that Microsoft used to have about PowerPoint design to get ideas about effective presentations. I also adhere to the "Rule of 6." No more than 6 bullets per page and no more than 6 words per bullet. Last year at NCCE (Northwest Computer Conference for Educators is what it stands for I think) Patrick Crispin did a PowerPoint on how to make effective PP presentations...You can find it at <http://netsquirrel.com/powerpoint/complete.html>http://netsquirrel.com/powerpoint/complete.html Scroll down to Now That I Know PowerPoint, How Can I Use It to Teach? Link to a great ppt. <http://www.d.umn.edu/~jmackiew/Effective_PowerPoint_Presentations.ppt>http://www.d.umn.edu/~jmackiew/Effective_PowerPoint_Presentations.ppt http://netsquirrel.com/powerpoint/complete.html Scroll down to Now that I know PowerPoint... Slide Show Safety: <http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/safety.html>http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/safety.html Is PowerPoint Evil? <http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/columnists/johnson/johnson003.shtml>http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/columnists/johnson/johnson003.shtml I also have a more general article on effective workshops that mentions PPT at: <http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/sw.htm>http://www.doug-johnson.com/dougwri/sw.htm http://presentationzen.blogs.com/ Lots on the good use of PPT. Powerpointlessness by Jamie McKenzie <http://www.fno.org/sept00/powerpoints.html>http://www.fno.org/sept00/powerpoints.html One of the best sites I've ever used is <http://www.presentersuniversity.com/>www.presentersuniversity.com It requires a free registration but it is really worth the few minutes it takes. They have articles on the effective use of PowerPoint and really cool backgrounds. The other great thing about this site is that it addresses presentation in general and there are backgrounds available for ALL presentation packages! If I may just voice a humble opinion. I feel that, at times, it is not the creation of the PowerPoint that is so effective as the way the speaker uses that presentation for instruction. I have sat in countless meetings when the slide was on the screen and the speaker just stood there and read it to us. I know how to read and so does everyone else in the class/meeting. If, however, the slide merely illuminated the idea with bullet points and/or an illustrations and then the speaker elaborates on those points (without reading them verbatim) then you have a more effective presentation. I think too often presenters rely on the "bells & whistles" with animation and sound effects to the detriment of the presentation as a whole. In short, the PowerPoint should merely illuminate what the speaker is teaching.
