Here is a L-O-N-G overdue Hit of Australia book reccomendations. Thanks to all who responded more promptly than I am. Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French Try 'Are we there yet?', a picture book by Alison Lester in which a family really DOES take a tour around Australia. Beautiful, realistic illustrations, and a humour that appeals to adults as well as children. The Singing Snake by ? ELS My favorite to share with our second graders as they study Australia is Wombat Goes Walkabout by Michael Morpurgo. Graeme Base also has My Grandma Lives in Gooligulch. I like to read Thank you, Santa by Wild to my first graders each year in January. This is actually a year round story with a girl in Australia exchanging letters with Santa every other month. It is one of our favorites. I do a Mem Fox author study in the spring and love talking about Australia! And the wonderful animals... don't forget Graeme Base too! The first grade teachers were very appreciative of the suggestions. Thanks, NETTERS!
