Wikipedia

I know our listserv has exhausted the subject of Wikipedia in recent months,
but I found Wikipedia information listed in our Nettrekker Online Database
and called Nettrekker to find out why they include information that is not
accurate from Wikipedia. I was told that in a few weeks I, as administrator,
would have the right to go in and filter out Wikipedia, and that so many
librarians actually like Wikipedia information. I am passionate that if
information is being used in HS research papers and that information is NOT
correct, then they should not use it. Our teachers do not allow students to
cite from Wikipedia for this reason. The man I spoke to at Nettrekker said
that many librarians were just as passionate that the information in
Nettrekker deserved to be there. So it's there. Are we as librarians,
NUTS!!! Don't we value and teach Accuracy, Credibility, Authority, Currency
and Coverage. Has information gotten so white-washed that anything goes? Not
here at my school. I have to rethink continuing to spend money on the
Nettrekker online database because I am pushing it as a research tool that
is better than to using Google.
