Quite a bit late in responding, but thought I'd put in my two cents. I had a cataloging professor in college who always said to remember: "low (number) before high (number) and short (number) before long (number) when shelving. For example, with 342.01 and 342.101 just after the decimal point-the zero is lowest thus goes first on the shelf. With 342.1 and 342.12, 342.1 is the shortest thus goes first on the shelf. Have the student shelver (or adult for that matter) cover the number with their thumbnail, exposing just the first number after the decimal point to determine high/low and continue exposing numbers to distinguish short/long. (The numbers I've used are just arbitrary intended only for example and probably are not accurate dewey classifications). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Janis A.
