Here's what I do with the student magazines. I also do not have an aide. I
am using Follett circulation system. I have put bar codes on many brown
envelopes ( I save the ones that come in the mail) and have had them
laminated. Students are allowed to check out one magazine and one book, or
two books. When they want to check out a magazine, I take one of the brown
envelopes and scan it. It is not in the computer and comes up with a dialog
box asking if I want to add it. I say yes, and then put the title or code
(AG American Girl) plus the issue date in the title line, and enter. This
makes it a temporary add. The kids them put the magazine in the envelope
and go on their merry way. When the magazine comes back in the envelope, I
scan it and get the box that tells me that may the bar code may now be
reused. If the envelope doesn't come back, I can still tell who had it by
checking the overdue list to see who's name is next to the magazine issue I
have in my hand.

I also don't let the newest issue of a magazine go out so that everyone can
see what is in it before someone takes it away. When magazines get lost I
charge a standard $3.00, but am thinking about raising that price.
