I've been a media specialist for eight years, worked as a volunteer shelving
books in the school my daughter attended before I went back to work and
shelved numerous books while in high school. I can't believe I'm asking this
question...but I am. Reply to me and I will post a HIT.

Fiction and Easy.

Authors last name – but do you spell the author's name all the way out or do
you just use the first three letters?

Should all the Mo Willems, then the Vera Williams followed by the Ken
Wilson-Max books as it is in Follett, or should E Wil A chair for my
mother be followed by E Wil The pigeon finds a hot dog! ?? Should all the
Angela Johnson books be followed by all the David Johnson book, then the
Troy Johnson books?

I know if I print out a list from Follett it will alphabetize using the
whole name, but when students are looking for a book I always told them to
look for the first three letters of the authors last name and then for the
title. My clerk is very good at alphabetizing and she uses the entire name.

Also, do you keep series books together: Arthur was originally written by
Brown and then Krensky wrote the chapter books. Clifford was written by
Norman Bridwell, but also by Margulies, Mills, Inches, Page and Weinberger
and then there is the American Girl series written by Tripp and Porter...Is
it better to teach the students the 'correct way' to look for a book via the
OPAC - or make is easier to window shop by putting them all together...
