I am a first-year library media specialist at a low-income high school with 1100 students. My principal has requested that I develop some type of reading incentive program for our lowest-achieving students. A substantial percentage of those students are African American males. The group of students needing our help the most is small enough (about 80 students) to allow us to work with them individually. The principal is willing to provide some funding for material incentives. I would appreciate hearing about any programs that will help me get these students into the library and reading. Suggestions for books and magazines would also be helpful.
