Thanks to those who sent me some suggestions for books and videos about exercise and nutrition. I received an annotated bibliography attachment that had been part of a family wellness event, and it listed many books but none were especially recommended, so I did not copy and paste them here. However, if you would like for me to send you the bibliography as an attachment, let me know and I will be glad to do so. Below are the other recommendations I received. Thank you! ----------------------------- Nancy Carlson's Get Up and Go Lizzy Rockwell's The Busy Body Book Capstone Press, Pebble Plus Series, Healthy Eating with MyPyramid - example title by Mari Schuh - Being Active --------------------------------------- One of the sites we found this year listed some Arthur videos that have been put out in a series. We are waiting for the one on Peanut Allergies as that is a big deal in our building. ---------------------------------------- Videos: All About Health and Hygiene--Schlessinger All About Nutrition and Exercise--Schlessinger Nutrition--Schlessinger Personal Health and Hygiene--Schlessinger Food and Nutrition #1--100% Educational Videos The Magic School Bus Inside Ralphie (there is also one about getting eaten) The Five Senses (?)--100% Educational Videos Books: The Food Pyramid--Joan Kalbacken Vitamins and Minerals--Joan Kalbacken Food Safety--Sharon Gordon A Good Night's Sleep--Sharon Gordon (there is a whole series by her on the five senses as well) Exercise--Sharon Gordon Good Enough to Eat: A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition--Lizzy Rockwell Get Moving: Tips on Exercise--Kathy Feeney Get Some Exercise!--Angela Royston Physical Fitness--Alvin Silverstein (there is also a whole series by him on injuries, etc.) Both the Schlessinger and the 100% Educational Videos are used constantly by my teachers. The Schlessinger films come with sets of questions and teaching guides. Off the top of my head I can't remember if the others have guides or not, but the ones we have are generally geared for K-1 and are used for reinforcement and review rather than direct teaching. The only complaint I've ever heard is from one of my 5th grade teachers who said that some of the Schlessinger films for the youngest children sounded a little condescending to her, but a film with good solid information done in an interesting way is going to capture the attention of kids--especially those who learn better through visuals and as a rule, they don't care what the tone of the films is. There's also a very funny picturebook called Showdown at the Food Pyramid by Rex Barron that is a great fiction title to pair with the non-fiction ones. Our phys ed teacher doesn't like the 'new" version of the pyramid, so I've tried to keep information--newspaper and magazine articles, etc. with both the old and the new for her to use when doing a nutrition and exercise unit. Seems like this is an area that could use some additional titles. Now if I just had time to write!!! Nancy Dickinson, Librarian Hillsboro Elem.
